Freedom in our days

Tomorrow will be the Independence Day in the USA. It will be celebrated for the 230th time. 230 years of being independent! In Lithuania, where I am from, we are free just for 15 years. 15 years of new life,15 years of free life.
What does the freedom mean in our times? It means much. To me. How about you? If now somebody would come and occupied all the USA, could you fight for your freedom? Would you fight like in Independence War in the year 1775-1783? Would you?
In Lithuania 15 years ago people fought. They didn’t use the weapons, but they fought. Will you ask how? I could tell to you. In 1989 was made the Baltic way. It was the longest line of people, who were keeping their hands. 595 km of being together! Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians were together. Old and young were keeping their hands. It was like the symbol of wish to be freedom. It was the beginning of our freedom. In 1991 on the 13th of January was really cruel event in Lithuania. The Russians wanted to occupy our television tower. That was the last thing. And then people from Lithuania felt that they have to fight for their freedom. So there was the mass of people, who wanted to be free. Who don’t actually?. They surrounded television tower and tried not to let for Russians occupy it. They didn’t use weapons. They didn’t. They just were together, sang songs, burn bonfires. They didn’t afraid of Russians with weapons and tanks anymore. 14 people died in that cruel night. 14 people laid down theirs life for our independence.
Now it’s the different times for the USA and Lithuania both. We have no to fight for our freedom. Actually, many people, so do I, can’t imagine that the war could start in these times. Though in Lithuania people fought for freedom just 15 years ago( it can’t be compared with 230 years), I can’t imagine, that everything could be the same and in my time and my life.
So, what does the freedom means to us in these days? Could you lay your life for your country’s independence?

Happy Independence Day!
